 | "Vibrant Carnelian, accented by Midnight Blue Lapis and Precious Peridot complete this set. Earwires are non-tarnish Sterling Silver.
Stone Wisdom: Carnelian, also known as cornelian, looks good enough to eat, and it's no wonder. This popular flesh to brown-red chalcedony is named for the rich color of the Kornel cherry. Best qualities come from India where the brown tints (from iron oxides) are reddened by exposure to the sun. According to legend, carnelian gives timid people the courage they need to speak boldly and well. Lapis Lazuli has been highly valued for many thousands of years. The most famous locality for fine quality lapis lazuli is the same ancient deposit high in the mountains of Afganistan where it was originally mined at least 6000 years ago. Lapis lazuli was often made into jewelry, carvings, amulets and talismans which were believed to have occult powers. It was used by the ancient Egyptians in many religious ceremonies, and was often used as an inscription stone for various passages from the Book of the Dead.
Lapis lazuli was one of the stones in the 'Breastplate of Judgement' of Aaron, described in the Bible (Exodus: xxviii, 15-30).
Lapis lazuli was said to dispell melancholy and depression, and to cure recurring fevers. It was also said to impart ancient knowledge, and the wisdom to use it. Peridot is from a thirteenth century English word peridote.
From ancient times until the eighteenth century, peridot was referred to as 'topazion' or 'topaz', most likely because it was found on the island of Topazios (known today as Zebirget or Isle of St. John in Egypt) in the Red Sea. In the eighteenth century the name topaz was given to our mineral topaz of today, and gem olivine became known as peridot. Yellowish peridot also has been commonly referred to as chrysolite which is from Greek meaning yellow stone. The term chrysolite has also been commonly used in refering to greenish-yellow gem chrysoberyl. " Location: Hand-Crafted Size: Approx. 1 1/2" Weight: 1.0 lbs. Quantity Available: 1 Price: $14.00 |
