 | "Aragonite -- named after the province of Aragon in Spain -- has the same chemical composition as calcite (calcium carbonate), but a different crystal structure. It most often appears as small white mounds of needle-like crystals, but the cluster we show here is composed of short and long nearly hexagonal, translucent, columnar crystals that terminate in a flat surface and radiate from the center (like the spokes of a wheel). Some of the crystals may be twinned or inter-penetrating. The light to medium red-brown color is due to the presence of other minerals, most likely iron.
